Today’s Chair Chair post focuses on one of the questions my clients ask me the most. That is, how to keep their hair healthy, or make it healthy again. Read on for my tips!

Healthy Hair Tips:

  • Moisturize! – Conditioner is very important to maintaining healthy hair. Naturally, hair is made up of both protein and moisture, so it needs both to remain in good condition. Too much protein without moisture can make hair brittle and too  much moisture without protein can make hair too elastic.  This is especially important now that the weather is colder and the air is drier!

Try a leave in conditioner like Its a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product every time you shampoo and condition your hair.

  • Moderate heat To be honest, I think it is unrealistic to say you will never use heat on you hair.  But like many things in life, moderation is key. Make sure you use a heat protectant product every time you use heat on your hair. This will definitely help protect your hair.

Its a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product contains heat protectant- win!

  • Shampoo less often– If your hair feels dry and the scalp area is not greasy I suggest giving dry shampoo a try! Sometimes just cutting back to shampooing every other day and using a dry form in between is enough to prevent hair feeling dry.

Kenra Professional Dry Shampoo is my current favorite!

  • Comb vs. Brush– I have heard (from many sources) that you should only comb your hair when it is wet rather than use a comb. I cannot say that using a comb instead of a brush really makes a difference. Rather, it is HOW you comb or brush. To help avoid breakage, start from the bottom of your hair and be gentle as you pull the comb through.

Personally, I like the wet comb to detangle my hair after I shampoo it. I spray my leave-in conditioner first and then in sections I comb starting from the ends and making my way to the scalp.

  • Use soft hair ties– Invest in the fabric hair ties with a knot. they are not expensive but they are great for your hair.  I use these all the time to help avoid hair breakage.  When you twist a regular elastic hair tie tightly around your hair you can actually cause hair to break where the band is touching your hair.

I DO still use regular black ties when I am styling my hair and need it too stay put.  But I love the fabric ties when I am working out or sleeping.  They are way less likely to leave indents in your hair making second day styling that much easier AND They come in tons of colors and patterns!  Try these fabric ties to get you started.

  • Moderate color changes– Going back and forth from light to dark risks the integrity of your hair.  Lower integrity equals less healthy hair. When thinking about your next change, consider it being long term and prepare for a process. This is the best way to keep the strength and shine in your hair. If you are really concerned about the health of your hair, avoid color/lightener all together.

NOTE: lightener has potential to be more damaging than color.  Keep that in mind when considering the maintenance you will need.

  • TLC- Pay attention to what your hair needs. REMEMBER, everyone’s hair is different! What helps me may not help you.  BUT, these are some guidelines you can start with as you make your way to healthier hair.

My best advice:

  • Talk to your stylist– If you are having issues with your hair or do not like the way it feels, ask your stylist.  He or she will be able to give you tips and product recommendations to help. More than likely, your stylist knows more about your hair than you do-after all they can see your whole head when you are in their chair.  Your stylist probably has other clients with the same problems and can tell you what worked and did not work for them.

My rule of thumb- ask your stylist before trying pills or products you see in the media.  Sometimes the product you think will fix your problem, will actually not help or can even make it worse.
